What the evidence actually shows

Listeners reliably prefer the louder of two otherwise identical presentations, which drove decades of escalation. Loudness normalisation on streaming platforms removes that advantage while the dynamic-range cost remains. [1]

The better-designed studies point away from this claim. It survives because it is intuitive, or because early weak findings were widely repeated before stronger work arrived.
